Free
I wrote this poem for National Poetry Day.
Free as the wind
The wind in her hair
Born thick-skinned
Because a kid doesn’t care
A kid doesn’t think
What the others will say
A kid doesn’t shrink
‘Cos she just wants to play
Wants to play with her mates
And she won’t let it go
If they want to decide on her fate
She’ll say “no”
“I can be who I want
And there’s no way to stop it
There’s no way that I’m not
Flying off in a rocket
One day when I’m grown
And you’re stuck on the ground
I’ll be zooming through space
Where there’s no-one around
‘Cept the sky, and the stars
And the nothing I love
And the things that there are
In that space high above
‘Cause I’m gonna be there
And you’ll still be stuck here
And I never will care
No, it’s not you I fear
I can be who I want
And you bet that it’s true
Do you see that I’m not
Going to listen to you?”
She’s free as the birds
The birds in the sky
So whatever you heard,
She will not let you lie
Or deceive that she’ll fail
To stand on the moon
She’s a girl, but not frail
And she’ll be there real soon.
